Voters get it right…? At this point in the season there isn’t a whole lot to get right. I do disagree with the move to knock out North Carolina, however. The Tar Heels were without 12 players, including eight starters, and still gave No. 19 LSU a run for their money. A drop to No. 24 or No. 25 would have seemed right.
Biggest Movers…Oregon takes a seat in the top 10 for the first time this season after a more than convincing 72 point win. The Ducks will have a hard time containing their No. 7 ranking with a tough schedule to come. The biggest drop goes to Florida, who fell four places. The Gators failed to deliver a knockout to Miami (OH) and it cost them votes.
Welcome to the Top 25…The rise of unranked to No. 20 for Utah seems about right for the Utes. They handled a Pittsburgh team that started the season ranked No. 15. I’m a bit surprised to welcome South Carolina and Stanford. Carolina looked weak in a surprisingly big margin win over Southern Miss. Stanford, however looked strong with a win over Sac-State, but I still thought a few other teams deserved the poll position over the Cardinals.
We were snubbed...! Although Michigan’s win over UConn may have been the most impressive of the teams that just missed the cut, I think the Arizona Wildcats have the most reason to shout. Arizona was a team I had just on the cusp of the Top 25 to start the year, and although it was a 41-2 victory over Toledo, I thought the entire Arizona team looked like they were ready to contend for a PAC 10 title. In particular, I thought Nick Foles looked like the most impressive quarterback on opening weekend.
There’s always next week…With a bevy of Top 25 teams squaring off Saturday, you can believe there will be a lot more movement come next week. Ohio State and Miami will either be doing some moving up or down, or maybe even trading places. Florida State could make a huge move in the poll as well with a win over Oklahoma. Either Michigan or Notre Dame will also make a trip back to the Top 25 next week.
