Fell from poll: Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Florida State, Georgia,
Others receiving votes: Pittsburgh 62, Fresno State 48, Air Force 46, California 45, Georgia 42, Florida State 41, Missouri 37, Georgia Tech 35, Clemson 25, North Carolina 23, Texas A&M 18, Texas Tech 17, Michigan State 15, James Madison 11, Kansas State 10, Oklahoma State 10, Maryland 6, East Carolina 4, Nevada 2, Baylor 1, Boston College 1, North Carolina State 1, Northwestern 1,
Voters get it right…? There were some tough calls to make this week. An easy one was dropping Virginia Tech from the polls, though. Voters had to decide what to do with now one loss teams Penn State and Miami (FL), who lost to the No.1 and No.2 teams in the poll respectively. Dropping Miami five spaces seemed about right. West Virginia moving up to 21 makes be scratch my head as the Mountaineers barely escaped Marshall last week after a less than impressive first week win against Coastal Carolina.
Biggest Movers…Miami and Penn State moving down were obviously big moves. But they were expected big moves. Michigan shot up into the rankings for the first time this season, going from unranked to No. 20. With their win over Georgia, South Carolina moved from No. 24 to No. 13. I’m not sold just yet to the Gamecocks and would have liked to see a smaller rise than 11 places in the polls. That’s a shocker to me. I’m a bit confused for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. They handled Idaho quite easily and still came across a move down.
Welcome to the Top 25…Michigan moves into a comfortable position in the poll for the first time this year. The Wolverines have produced two big wins this season against two of the countries more talented non-ranked teams. Houston moves into the Polls. The Cougars will be tested by a UCLA team looking for their first win this week. Arizona moved into the polls after two convincing wins against weak opponents. The Wildcats, however, look like a powerful offensive and defensive team this season. Oregon State was given a pass back in following a bye week. Perhaps voters just wanted the Beavers to think about their mistakes.
We were snubbed...! There are not a lot of teams that got snubbed this week. Teams that moved out rightfully deserved to move out of the poll and teams on the cusp of the poll I feel still need to prove some things. Air Force beat a talented BYU team and California pounded Colorado. Both may deserve the biggest look. I think if any team wants to argue about being snubbed its Nebraska, who was moved out of their No. 6 spot. Texas took the position after moving down from five, but Nebraska has been more impressive than a Longhorn team that struggled with Rice week one and was down to Wyoming in the second quarter last week.
There’s always next week…Week three provides even more poll moving positbilies than week two did. There may be only one Top 25 matchup – Arizona vs. Iowa – but there are plenty of trap games for top teams facing off against teams looking to make a move into the polls. Air Force could get their chance with a win over Oklahoma. Florida will finally be SEC tested this week against Tennessee. Arkansas has a chance to prove how good they really are with a trip to Georgia. Clemson could move into the polls with a win against Auburn, or is it a game for Cameron Newton to make his opening statement for the Heisman? Nebraska will finally get to test their defense this week as they face Jake Locker and Washington. It’s another big Saturday!
