College Football Report - 2010-2011 College Football & Basketball Program Rankings:

In 2006, the University of Florida became the first school ever to bring in championship seasons in both Division-I basketball and football, in the same season.

On January 8, 2007, the 2006 Gators football team took down Ohio State in the BCS National Championship to win their third ever National Title, since the national poll era of 1936 began.

That same year, on April 2, the ‘06-07 Gators basketball team played Ohio State for the National Championship, as well. In an 84-75 win, the Gators basketball team cut down the nets, claiming their first ever NCAA Tournament Championship.

It was the first time, and it’s been the last time, that a program has brought in National Championships in America’s two most popular college sports.

This year, unless a miracle happens in the SEC Tournament, there’s no reason to expect Auburn to pull off the same fate. The Tiger’s 11-19 basketball team doesn’t exactly compare with its 14-0 football team.

In honor of the upcoming NCAA Basketball Tournament, I raise a question: What school has the best football and men’s basketball program for the 2010-2011 season?

Duke will never win the argument. For once, Michigan State’s football team picked up the slack, but their basketball team sank. Kansas, don’t think so. The parity between the programs is farther away than many may believe.

A couple of Big Ten teams pulled in impressive seasons and one team, not known as a power in any sport aside from maybe surfing, makes a surprise appearance in the rankings:

1.) Ohio State

2010 Final FB Rank: #5 (12-1) – 2011 Final BB Rank: #1 (29-2)

FB Championships: 5 (2002) – BB Final Four App: 10 (2007)

Buckeyes…The Bucks take the top nod of the list because of their domination in both sports. Over the last decade the Buckeyes have owned the football field and basketball court in college sports. In football, Ohio State cruised to a 12-1 season and Sugar Bowl win behind quarterback Terrelle Pryor. In basketball, the Bucks have brought in six regular season championships and three conference tournament championships within the last decade. This year, OSU has been a consistent No. 1, losing just two games the entire season. With freshman forward Jared Sullinger down low and junior guard William Buford lighting up the three point line, the Bucks are again an NCAA Tournament favorite.

2.) Wisconsin

2010 Final FB Rank: #7 (11-2) – 2011 Final BB Rank: #13 (23-7)

FB Championships: 0 – BB Final Four App: 2 (2000)

Badgers…Wisconsin may be No. 2 on the list, but they’re most feared by No. 1. The Badgers were the only team to knock off the Buckeyes in football this year and one of two teams to take down the Bucks in basketball. On the football field, it was the Badgers consistent ground pounding rush game that led them to an 11 win season and Rose Bowl appearance. In basketball, it’s been their old school shooters and three point specialists that have guided them to a third place regular season Big Ten finish. With senior forward Jon Leuer and junior guard Jordan Taylor scoring at will, the Badgers have the size and guard play to make things interesting come Tourney time.

3.) San Diego State

2010 Final FB Rank: NR (9-4) – 2011 Final BB Rank: #7 (29-2)

FB Championships: 0 – BB Final Four App: 0

Aztecs…Shocked to see San Diego State so high on the list? To be honest, so am I. But there really wasn’t any way of avoiding the special seasons the Aztecs put together on both the football field, and hardwood. SDSU doesn’t own a championship in either sport, but in that came fuel for the fire. In football, the Aztecs brought in their highest win total since 1977 and first bowl victory since 1969, in a Poinsettia Bowl win over Navy. Freshman running back Ronnie Hillman earned Freshman All-American honors after rushing for 1,532 yards and 17 touchdowns. On the court, the Aztecs became one of the last remaining undefeated teams, before losing to BYU Jan. 26. In six NCAA Tournament appearances the Aztecs have never made a final four, however, with size and scoring ability to go around, the Aztecs may be primed for an unexpected run at the Final Four this year.

4.) Connecticut

2010 Final FB Rank: NR (8-5) – 2011 Final BB Rank: #21 (21-9)

FB Championships: 0 – BB Final Four App: 3 (2009)

Huskies…A surprise in both sports, the Huskies threw off critics on their way to more than respectable seasons on both accounts. In football, the Huskies brought in their first ever Big East Championship and first ever BCS Bowl game appearance. To end the 2010 season, UConn won five consecutive conference games and running back Jordan Todman collected All-American honors. Not ranked in the preseason AP basketball poll, the Huskies opened with wins over No. 2 Michigan State and No. 9 Kentucky and were on their way to a 10-0 start and No. 4 ranking by week eight. Led by junior guard Kemba Walker averaging over 23 points a game, the Huskies shouldn’t be overlooked in their return to the NCAA Tournament after a one year layoff.

5.) Notre Dame

2010 Final FB Rank: NR (8-5) – 2011 Final BB Rank: #4 (25-5)

FB Championships: 8 (1988) – BB Final Four App: 1 (1978)

Irish…Like UConn, Notre Dame’s success on the football field and basketball court came as a surprise this season. In football, their success was long awaited. In consecutive losses to Navy and Tulsa at midseason, the Irish began to look like the Notre Dame of late. Behind the leadership of freshman quarterback Tommy Rees, though, the Irish pulled in four straight wins to end the year, including upsets over Utah and USC, and a Sun Bowl victory over Miami (FL). In basketball, led by senior guard Ben Hansbrough, brother of former UNC star Tyler Hansbrough, the Irish have run away with a No. 2 finish in what is considered the best basketball conference. Winners of 11 of their last 12 Big East conference games, the Irish are a dangerous, sound team nearing Tournament time. With senior leadership, size to go around and six wins over ranked opponents, don’t count Notre Dame out of their second final four appearance just yet.
