First Quarter Hail Mary...3/08

"...where completion is considered unlikely"

Ohio State allegations

According to an unknown source, Ohio State coach Jim Tressel was well aware of the fire sale going on by OSU players last fall, eight months before the school found out.

A new Yahoo! Sports investigation displays some pretty believable evidence. The investigation does point out, as well, that failing to disclose a rules violation is itself an NCAA violation.

If it is found that Tressel did know about his players misdoings, Ohio State could face similar actions USC faced last year.

The news and new investigation comes with bad timing as Terrelle Pryor and the OSU five are currently in the process of appealing their five game, 2011 suspension.

Hall of Fame nominees

The National Football Foundation released a list of 79 players and nine coaches as Division 1-A finalist for the College Football Hall of Fame 2011 class.

The final class will officially be announced in May, in which the Division 1-A portion will be cut to around 15 members.

Notables on the list include former Nebraska quarterback Tommie Frazier, former Alabama linebacker and NFL Hall of Famer, the late Derrick Thomas and former Florida State star Deion Sanders.

Others include: Brian Bosworth, Randall Cunningham, Eric Dickerson, Lorenzo White, Russell Maryland and Jonathan Ogden.

Coaches Lloyd Carr, Jimmy Johnson and R.C. Slocum are up for consideration as well.

Pro Day Buzz

The NFL Combine is old news by now. In, are NFL Pro Days.

Tuesday, March 8 brings on three of the more anticipated Pro Days leading up to the NFL Draft, in Arkansas, Auburn and Oklahoma.

Auburn quarterback Cam Newton will have yet another chance to show scouts he can transition into an NFL quarterback and improve on what many believed was a poor throwing performance at the combine. Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley, competing with Newton for the possible No. 1 overall pick, will also be working out Tuesday.

On display at Arkansas will be one of classes other top quarterbacks in Ryan Mallett. Mallett also threw at the combine, bringing in a more impressive performance than Newton. Mallett is still vying for a first round selection, though, and will need to answer more questions regarding his character.

The Mad Hatter gets a float

It’s not exactly the heavy season when it comes to college football headlines. There’s always an arrest to report on, but they get a bit redundant.

In lighter news, LSU’s Les Miles received his own float to cruse Bourbon Street for Mardi Gras.

The Mad Hatter float comes intact with a clock with one second remaining and some grass in his mouth, fitting on both accounts.

The clock signifies the slew of clock mismanagements Miles has gone through in the past, including most notably against Tennessee this season. The grass represents the snack Miles treated himself to at the end of the Alabama game.

Even Miles has to think the float is creative.
