First Quarter Hail Mary...3/10

"...where completion is considered unlikely"

Georgia Violations

One day after Ohio State Coach Jim Tressel was put under the NCAA microscope, the University of Georgia released its own set of violations committed by the Dawgs football staff.

In the recruitment of 2010 defensive end signee, Ray Drew, the University acknowledged and sent a letter to the Southeastern Conference stating they committed violations when Drew announced his intentions to attend Georgia on Jan. 28.

Two former Georgia players attended Drew’s announcement, a violation of five NCAA bylaws, as Drew had not officially signed with the school.

Who the former Georgia players were has not been released, nor has a penalty for the violations.

Pro Day update

Wednesday gave way to quite a few impressive pro day performances.

First, at Cal, defensive end Cameron Jordan put on a show for 30 scouts from 15 NFL teams. He stood on his numbers from the combine, but participated in position drills, and even dropped into coverage. It wasn’t clear who asked a 286-pound defensive end to do coverage drops, but word is he looked good doing it. I’d be a surprise to see Jordan slip out of the top 12 or even top 10 picks of the draft.

At Wisconsin, defensive end J.J. Watt, offensive tackle Gabe Carimi and tight end Lance Kendricks took center stage. Watt built on an impressive pro day, while Carimi reiterated that he “is the best tackle in the draft.”

Kendricks was rumored to be most impressive, drawing comparisons to Dustin Keller of the Jets. He also improved his 40-time to 4.50 and vertical to 38 inches. Running back John Clay turned in a better performance, but still turned in a relatively slow time of 4.72 in the 40.

Alabama stars, Mark Ingram and Marcell Dareus, also took time to work out in front of more than 100 NFL personnel. Ingram, considered the drafts top running back, improved on his 40 time, where he ran a 4.62 at the combine. Wednesday, Ingram reportedly ran near the 4.47 range. Ingram impressed in position drills as well. Dareus continued to raise his stock, running through position drills with ease and perfection. (Alabama media relations)

Thursday’s pro day events include: Nebraska, Oregon, Miami (Fl), Mississippi State and Kentucky among others.

Leach wants some help

Former Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach has asked the Texas Supreme Court to review his wrongful termination lawsuit, which Leach filed against the University over a year ago.

Tech fired Leach in Dec. of 2009, after allegations of mistreating a player with a concussion. Leach denies any mistreating and claims the reason he was let go was because of an $800,000 bonus due the next day.

Tech is trying to claim sovereign immunity from the lawsuit, but Leach claims they waived that right because of the firing in Dec. 2009.

A decision in January upheld Tech’s immunity claim, but Leach can go after a non-monetary ruling that he was wrongfully let go.
