First Quarter Hail Mary...3/15

"...where completion is considered unlikely"

Ohio State problems

The off-season news coverage of Ohio State football seems to never end. Monday, Coach Jim Tressel issued an apology to Ohio State fans for violating the school’s and NCAA rules regarding the OSU five suspensions.

Tressel received a two game suspension for lying to the NCAA about knowing about five of his players, including quarterback Terrelle Pryor, receiving extra benefits. A punishment from the NCAA has not yet been handed down to Tressel.

The man who informed Tressel of the violations through e-mail, Christopher T. Cicero, has received death threats from Ohio State fans. Cicero passed along information that some of Tressel’s players had been receiving handouts, nearly eight months before the NCAA was made aware. A former walk-on at Ohio State, Cicero is currently a Columbus lawyer.

Death threats aren’t the only thing Ohio State fans are busy with this spring, apparently driving people bat shit crazy is also on the agenda.

ESPN college football analyst and former OSU quarterback Kirk Herbstreit, is taking his family and moving from his home state of Ohio, due to the criticism received from Buckeyes fans. Herbstreit’s job forces him to be somewhat objective towards Ohio State sometimes, and forces him to bring fairness to the position, something OSU fans don’t seem to understand. Herbstreit is currently in the process of moving to Nashville, Tenn.

Pro Day update

It wouldn’t seem as though LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson’s stock could really rise any higher than it already is. Apparently, things aren’t what they seem, as Peterson again stole the show and improved his stock, this time at the LSU NFL pro day.

Considered the drafts top defensive back by nearly everyone around, Peterson stood on his numbers from the combine, but ran through drills for scouts.

Once considered a sure top five selection, the talented corner could find his name being called as high as No. 2 to Denver or No. 1 overall to Carolina. Carolina later had dinner with Peterson, while the Broncos have scheduled a private workout with Peterson, with the time and date to be determined.

Other notable LSU performers included linebacker Kelvin Sheppard, who ran a 4.70 40, defensive lineman Drake Nevis, who stood on his combine numbers and Terrence Toliver, a 6-foot-4, 211-pound wideout who caught the attention of a lot of scouts with his pass catching ability. Toliver also brought in a 4.54 40-time.

Arizona held its NFL pro day last week, where defensive ends Ricky Elmore and Brooks Reed took center stage. Reed has been the more highly regarded of the two, mentioned as a possible late first round pick for teams looking for an outside linebacker, but Elmore was the more watched player Saturday.

With 21.5 sacks over the last two years, Elmore was a highly productive college player, with a good motor. He ran a 4.83 40 at 256-pounds, and brought in a 34.5 vertical jump.

Also catching the eye of scouts at the event, running back Nic Grigsby, who brought in times of 4.38 and 4.39 in the 40 and posted a 43.5 vertical jump and 11-foot broad jump. At 5-foot-11, 199, Grigsby also put up 21 reps of 225-pounds. All numbers would have sat among the top for running backs at the combine.

Notable pro day's Tuesday include Florida, Kansas State and Pittsbrugh. On Wednesday, Illinois, Michigan State and Penn State will host NFL scouts.

Notre Dame found at fault

The state of Indiana has found the University of Notre Dame guilty of failing to have safe working conditions in the death of a student videographer in October.

Declan Sullivan, a 20-year old film student at Notre Dame, died when the hydraulic lift he was filming a Notre Dame practice from fell over in high winds.

The school has been fined $77,500 for five violations, which include failing to properly train Sullivan and failing to have the lift inspected regularly.

Winds were gusting as high as 51 mph at the time of the accident. The Irish football team, which had practiced indoors the day before, moved the practice that day outside despite the continuing high winds.
