College Football Report - Conference Race Update:

The South Eastern Conference Championship is set. Auburn will meet South Carolina in the title game in three weeks. The rest of the NCAA BCS conference races aren’t quite as easy to predict. The five other BCS conferences – ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, PAC-10 – will give a clearer picture of who will and won’t be making the conference title game, or have a chance to be crowned conference champ after this weekend. Below is a list of the teams still alive in their conference title race, followed by the games this weekend that will determine the future champion.

Conference:

Teams Alive:

Big Ten:

Wisconsin, Michigan State and Ohio State

ACC:

Virginia Tech, Miami (FL), Florida State, Maryland and North Carolina State

Big East:

Pittsburgh, Connecticut, South Florida, West Virginia and Syracuse

PAC-10:

Oregon and Stanford

SEC:

Auburn vs. South Carolina

Big 12:

Nebraska, Missouri, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Oklahoma

Confusing...

Big Ten:

#7 Wisconsin (9-1, 5-1) @ Michigan (7-3, 3-3)

Wisconsin needs to win out in games against Michigan this week and Northwestern next week. In a three way tie, the Badgers still take the Rose Bowl, based upon the Badgers BCS ranking.

Purdue (4-6, 2-4) @ #12 Michigan State (9-1, 5-1)

Michigan State needs to win out against the Boilermakers and Penn State and then needs Ohio State to lose, to prevent a three way tie. The Spartans hold the upper hand over Wisconsin because of their head-to-head win over the Badgers.

#9 Ohio State (9-1, 5-1) @ #20 Iowa (7-3, 4-2)

Ohio State is rooting for a Wisconsin loss. The Buckeyes need to win out and have the Badgers lose in order to avoid a three way tie and advance to the Rose Bowl. Ohio State does not play Michigan State this season.

ACC:

#16 Virginia Tech (8-2, 6-0) @ #24 Miami (7-3, 5-2)

The Hurricanes need a little luck. They need to beat Virginia Tech Saturday, and then need Virginia to beat Va. Tech in the last week of the season. If Tech beats Miami, the Hokies will have the Coastal Division wrapped up.

#25 Florida State (7-3, 5-2) @ Maryland (7-3, 4-2)

Plain and simple, Florida State needs a win to stay alive in the Atlantic Division race. Florida State would then need NC State to lose to North Carolina this week or Maryland next week if they beat Maryland. Maryland will need to beat FSU and NC State next week.

North Carolina State (7-3, 4-2) @ North Carolina (6-4, 3-3)

UNC is out of the race. NC State is alive and in the driver seat for the Atlantic Division. If the Wolfpack beat the Tar Heels, they will then need to beat Maryland next week as well. Maryland holds the tie-break over FSU.

Big East:

Pittsburgh (5-4, 3-1) @ South Florida (6-3, 3-2)

The Panthers need to win out. They sit in the driver seat of the title race, being the only team with one conference loss. Or Pitt needs to beat South Florida this week and West Virginia next week and hope for UConn loss in one of their last three games. South Florida needs to beat both Pitt and UConn, then have Syracuse lose to UConn. AND then...West Virginia lose one of their last three.

Connecticut (5-4, 2-2) @ Syracuse (7-3, 4-2)

The Orange need to beat UConn plain and simple. They then need to have Pitt lose one of its last three games against USF, West Virginia or Cincy, as well. UConn can win the conference if the Huskies win out and Pitt loses one of their last three games.

West Virginia (6-3, 2-2) @ Louisville (5-5, 2-3)

The Mountaineers need to win out in games against Louisville, Pitt and Rutgers. They then need Syracuse to lose to UConn and UConn then to lose to Cincy. The Big East is a mess.

Big 12:

#8 Nebraska (9-1, 5-1) @ #19 Texas A&M (7-3, 4-2)

Right now, it’s going to take a miracle to hold the Cornhuskers out of the Big 12 North title spot. Nebraska can still advance to the championship game with a loss to A&M Saturday. It would take a loss to Colorado next week to knock them from the game, if Missouri wins out. A&M needs to win out and have Oklahoma State lose its last two for the South race. Another Miracle.

#10 Oklahoma State (9-1, 5-1) @ Kansas (3-7, 1-5)

The Cowboys are in the Big 12 South title spot if they win out. They meet the Sooners in the last game of the year, a game that may determine the Big 12 South champ.

#14 Oklahoma (8-2, 4-2) @ Baylor (7-4, 4-3)

The Sooners need to win out, beating Oklahoma State in their season finale. If the Sooners lose Saturday, they’re knocked from the Big 12 South race.

#15 Missouri (8-2, 4-2) @ Iowa State (5-6, 3-4)

The Tigers need to win their remaining two games against ISU and Kansas, and then needs Nebraska to lose their last two games against Texas A&M and Colorado. The Tigers cannot simply make the Big 12 North title game by winning out and only one Nebraska loss because the Cornhuskers hold the tie break over the Tigers.
