Voters get it right…? The Biggest question of the week was obviously what to do with Alabama. The Tide is still a tremendously talented team so moving them down too far would look wrong, while at the same time there are still a lot of talented undefeated teams remaining. Moving them to No. 8 seems about right, or at least keeping LSU below the Tide feels right. They still have a chance to make their way back up the poll, with games against LSU and Auburn. Numbers one through three seem right. Ohio State has earned the No. 1 spot so far at least, with Oregon and Boise solid No. 2 and No. 3 choices. Personally, though, I feel like Nebraska deserved the No. 4 spot. Michigan State’s slight move seems a bit odd to me, especially behind an Arkansas team with one loss. This is a Spartan team that beat then No. 11 Wisconsin and No. 18 Michigan, while shutting down everyone’s Heisman favorite thus far.
Biggest Movers…A few teams made some big moves. Miami (FL) and Michigan both fell from the poll. Two teams had falls of eight spots in the poll. Alabama obviously fell to No. 8 after being the top ranked team and Arizona fell eight spots to No. 17, after previously being ranked No. 9. The Wildcats fell at home to Oregon State. The biggest mover of the week was South Carolina, though. The Gamecocks took nine leaps forward with their win over No. 1 Alabama. After consecutive weeks of being stagnate in the poll, LSU took a few steps forward with their win over Florida in the Swamp.
Welcome to the Top 25…The Oregon State Beavers enter the poll for the third time this year. The Beavers knocked off a Top 10 team on the road, the third time already this year they’ve faced a Top 10 team on the road. With its only losses coming to Boise and TCU, the Beavers have a chance to climb up the poll with solid PAC-10 play. West Virginia makes a move back to the poll after an easy win against UNLV. The Mountaineers continue to be the only Big East School receiving recognition this season.
We were snubbed...! I don’t think anyone outside the poll was really snubbed this week. Virginia Tech continues to impress, but with two losses, they’re going to need to win a couple more before they make an entrance back to the poll. Kansas State had a chance to make a move but failed against Nebraska. In the poll, if anyone wants to give the snub card it may be Michigan State, like I previously stated. The Spartans have beat two ranked teams this year and continue to be undefeated while only making modest moves in the AP poll. A complete offensive and defensive team, the Spartans have a chance to be 8-0 before their trip to Iowa. Utah moved down even after an absolute 68-27 blowout over Iowa State on the road. Someone had to make room for South Carolina, though, it just happened to be the Utes.
There’s always next week…A lot of teams in the poll will be making moves this week. Texas has a chance to make a move back into the Top 25 with a win at Nebraska. The Cornhuskers will be tough to beat and will be looking to give the Longhorns their third straight loss. The SEC features the marquee matchup of Arkansas at Auburn. The Tigers will be just as tough a test as the Tide was for the Razorbacks and Mallett won’t be able to turn the ball over if they expect to walk out with a win. One week after moving to the top spot, the Buckeyes travel to one of the toughest Big Ten places to play in Wisconsin’s Camp Randall Stadium. The Badgers have given the Buckeyes a tough time in the past and Saturday may be no different. Michigan and Denard Robinson have a chance to make a move back in with a win over Iowa at home, while Air Force needs to look out for a good San Diego State team on the road this week.
