First Quarter Hail Mary...2/16

"...where completion is considered unlikely"

Defensive stars to miss combine?

The 2011 NFL Draft is stacked with defensive talent, particularity on the defensive line. Clemson defensive end Da’Quan Bowers may become the No. 1 pick and as many as 15 other defensive linemen could find their names called on the first day of the draft. But Bowers and a couple other stud down lineman, may miss the biggest draft interview there is: the NFL Combine.

Bowers is recovering from arthroscopy knee surgery following the season and may be a limited participant at the combine, if not a no go. Oregon State defensive tackle Stephen Paea injured his knee in the Senior Bowl, needing surgery. Then there’s Ohio State defensive end, Cameron Heyward, who went under the knife to repair an injured elbow.

Mack Brown to take it slow at Texas

After years of loading up on top talent at February junior days, Texas Head Coach Mack Brown is taking a different approach to recruiting.

In past seasons, Texas has near filled their class with recruits pulling the trigger at the Longhorns spring junior day camps. After a 5-7 season in 2010, a reevaluation of the process was needed, in Mack’s mind at least. At the same time last year, in the 2011 class, Texas brought in over 13 verbal commitments following their junior day. This year, they have just five verbal commits.

Excitement in South Carolina building

With the recent addition of No. 1 recruit Jadeveon Clowney to South Carolina, fans and experts alike are begging to like what they see in Columbia. The talent level seems to have finally caught up to Head Coach Steve Spurrier’s liking.

The three headed tandem of quarterback Stephan Garcia, running back Marcus Lattimore and wideout Alshon Jeffery is one reason for optimism. Bringing in the No. 1 defensive player in the country, who should be able to contribute early, is another.

UCLA finally finds its coordinator

After a tireless search and numerous offers turned down, the Bruins have finally inked their new defensive coordinator. Former UFL defensive back coach Joe Tresey will take the job with UCLA.

Tresey has had stints recently with the UFL league’s Omaha Nighthawks, Cincinnati and South Florida. The hiring comes two months after the firing of defensive coordinator, Chuck Bullough.
