Auburn poison criminal caught

The psycho “allegedly” responsible for the Toomer’s Corner tree poisoning at the University of Auburn has been apprehended by police.

The man, Harvey Almorn Updyke Jr, 62, was arrested by police Thursday for criminal mischief and being a complete moron. Bond was set at $50,000 and if convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison. I’d give him 10 and a day.

Updyke admitted to the poisoning on a radio show weeks ago, claiming he poisoned the trees using an herbicide called Spike 80DF. Why did Updyke do it? He was upset about a “Scam Newton” shirt placed on the Bryant statue at the University of Alabama. A Crimson Tide fan and retired Texas State trooper, Updyke has children named Crimson and Bear.

Authorities say a lethal amount was added to the soil surrounding the trees and don’t believe the 130 year old trees will survive. The trees have been a long time symbol at Auburn and tradition has been to celebrate at Toomer’s Corner following football wins.

NFL Combine talks heating up

The NFL combine is less than a week away, with a start date of Feb. 23, as the anticipation continues to rise. Chad Reuter, a Senior Analyst at NFLDraftScout.com, breaks down the some of the past top performers and players of the 2011 combine who should impress.

Following the combine, players will have one final workout to impress scouts, at their respective universities pro days. NFL teams send scouts to the campuses of more than 100 colleges where players preform many of the same combine events, but get a closer interaction with scouts. NFL.com recently released the 2011 pro day schedule, with more to be added.

Savage heading to the desert

Former Rutgers quarterback Tom Savage has been shopping for a new home. Thursday, he found it, as it has been reported Savage will transfer to the University of Arizona.

A former four star recruit out of high school in 2009, Savage earned Freshman All-American honors in his first year at Rutgers, throwing for over 2,200 yards and 14 scores. Last season, however, injuries and poor play moved Savage to the sidelines in favor of freshman quarterback Chas Dodd.

Rutgers first denied Savage rights to speak with coaching staffs at Miami, Florida, Florida State and Michigan. The ruling was later reversed, but in the end, Savage still picked a team he was granted to talk to from the start.

After having to sit the 2011 season, due to NCAA transfer rules, Savage will be eligible for play in the 2012 season. He’ll follow in the steps of former Michigan State transfer, Nick Foles.

Peterson gets a raise

With so many other head coaches around the country pulling in new contracts and raises this time of year, doesn’t it seem fair to give Boise State head coach Chris Peterson one?

The state Board of Education did, as Peterson will receive a $50,000 bonus and $35,000 raise in annual salary. Boise brought in a 12-1 record in 2010, a year after going undefeated.

The raise will move Peterson’s salary up to $1.52 million in 2011, with future increases.

In need of some tutoring

A funny story out of the SEC. Auburn defensive back Jordan Spriggs appears to need a bit of help in English. The freshman sent out a Twitter message to 470 accounts stating:

“man who is good at writing papers ?????????????? i pay…”

Not surprisingly, Spriggs account is no longer active. It looks to be yet another unwise decision by a player using Twitter. Somehow, I feel head coach Gene Chizik didn't find the Tweet to be too funny.

As linebacker Antoine Carter accurately put it: “u gotta be the dumbest person in the world lol.”
